America Rules!

In case you missed America Ferrera’s speech at the Golden Globes:
“Thank you to the foreign press for recognizing this show and this character who is truly bringing a new face to television… and such a beautiful, beautiful message about beauty that lies deeper than what we can see. It’s such an honor to play a role that I hear from young girls on a daily basis how it makes them feel worthy and lovable and that they have more to offer the world than they thought. It’s such an honor to play this role….”

  1. Here’s the thing. My partner and I stopped watching this (Ugly Betty – currently mid-first-series here in the UK) because we still felt that the actress was somewhat stereotypical in terms of body shape and appearance. Sure, they’d added braces on her teeth and unusual clothes, but…
Maybe I’m just tired of seeing ‘ugly woman turns into a butterfly’ type films – you know the ones – where they start with a stereotypical model figure, dress her badly, and then later she turns out to be ‘beautiful’.
There’s something about the whole ‘not-thin-and-beautiful’ equals ‘clumsy-no-dress-sense-but-clever-and-beautiful-inside’ stereotype that’s really getting to me just now.
The character of the woman who is Betty’s friend seems more realistic.
I know things need to be altered a bit to make them work on screen… I’m just not convinced yet.
Should I be sticking with this series?
