The media are powerful socialization agents. We rely on the media for information about most things in our lives, to inform and shape our reality, values and beliefs (consciously and unconsciously). Socio-cultural messages regarding weight and thinness have been found to be of extreme significance in adolescent girls' lives. One study found that media and fashion were reportedly the most influential factors in exerting pressure to be thin (Wertheim, Paxton, Schutz &Muir, 1997).
